About this event

The purpose of this free harm reduction continuing education module is to promote best practices in the prevention of opioid overdose and blood borne pathogens such as HIV and HVC and to reduce stigma/discrimination toward people who use drugs (PWUD). The course will be for providers from the following disciplines: psychology, nursing, social work, pharmacy and medicine. Each discipline will have its own sessions and expert speaker.

Learning Objectives: at the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:

1) Evaluate harm reduction interventions for patients who use drugs

2) Articulate the effect of person-centered language on the care of patients who use drugs

3) Explain the difference between substance use and substance use disorder

Target audience: physicians, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and social workers

Detailed evaluation instructions for completing program evaluations and reporting CE credit will be provided to registrants.

The Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBREs) on Opioids and Overdose, based at the Rhode Island Hospital, is the first center of its kind aimed to collaboratively address the opioid epidemic. This COBRE is a vibrant, interdisciplinary center that supports research essential to understanding the mechanisms underlying opioid use disorder and developing innovative solutions. A main objective of the NIH-Funded COBRE initiative is to support the develop junior investigators into independently funded investigators, and to develop a critical mass of investigators competitive for peer-reviewed external research funding. The COBRE on Opioids and Overdose brings together an exceptional group of accomplished senior scientists, promising junior investigators, and distinguished collaborators, as well as policymakers, public health officials, community-based organizations dedicated to developing policies and practices to curb the opioid epidemic that is destroying the lives of so many of our community members.
